Scrabble Strategy & Tips

High-Scoring Two-Letter Words

Knowing two-letter words is essential for competitive Scrabble. Words like QI (11 pts), ZA (11 pts), JO (9 pts), and XI (9 pts) let you play parallel to existing words and score in two directions at once.

Common two-letter words every player should know: AA, AB, AD, AE, AG, AH, AI, AL, AM, AN, AR, AS, AT, AW, AX, AY, BA, BE, BI, BO, BY, DA, DE, DO, ED, EF, EH, EL, EM, EN, ER, ES, ET, EW, EX, FA, FE, GI, GO, HA, HE, HI, HM, HO, ID, IF, IN, IS, IT, JO, KA, KI, LA, LI, LO, MA, ME, MI, MM, MO, MU, MY, NA, NE, NO, NU, OD, OE, OF, OH, OI, OK, OM, ON, OP, OR, OS, OU, OW, OX, OY, PA, PE, PI, PO, QI, RE, SH, SI, SO, TA, TI, TO, UH, UM, UN, UP, US, UT, WE, WO, XI, XU, YA, YE, YO, ZA.

Using Blank Tiles Effectively

Blank tiles are worth 0 points but are the most valuable tiles in Scrabble. Save them for bingos -- playing all 7 tiles for a 50-point bonus. A blank tile dramatically increases your bingo chances.

When you have a blank, try entering your rack with ? in our finder to see all possible plays. Focus on 7-letter and 8-letter words. Common bingo-friendly racks include SATIRE?, RETINA?, and OATERS? -- the ? represents your blank tile becoming whatever letter completes the longest word.

Q Without U Words

Getting stuck with a Q and no U is every Scrabble player's nightmare. Memorize these Q-without-U words: QI, QADI, QAIDS, QAID, QANAT, QAT, QATS, QOPH, QOPHS, QWERTY, QINTAR, QINDAR, QWERTYS, TRANQ, TRANQS.

QI alone is the most-played word in competitive Scrabble. At just two letters, it can be placed almost anywhere and often scores well with bonus squares.

Rack Management

Don't just play the highest-scoring word each turn. Good players maintain a balanced rack -- roughly equal vowels and consonants, with common letters that combine easily. Keeping an S, blank, or high-value letter for the right moment often yields better results over the full game.

Avoid "rack dumps" where you play low-scoring words just to exchange bad tiles. Instead, use our word finder to see if there's a decent play hiding in your letters. You'd be surprised how often a 20+ point word is lurking in what looks like a terrible rack.

Scrabble Word Finder FAQ

How does the Scrabble word finder work?

Enter up to 15 letters from your Scrabble rack. Our solver searches a dictionary of over 350,000 words to find every valid play from your letters. Results are sorted by Scrabble point value by default, so the highest-scoring words appear first. Use ? for blank tiles.

Does it include all valid Scrabble words?

Yes. Our dictionary includes words from major Scrabble word lists including TWL (Tournament Word List, used in North America) and SOWPODS (used internationally). This means you'll find words valid for both competitive and casual play.

Can I use blank tiles?

Yes! Use a question mark (?) to represent a blank tile. You can use up to 2 blanks (matching a standard Scrabble set). The solver will try every letter A-Z in that position and return all valid results. Blank tiles score 0 points, which is reflected in the point values shown.

Does this work for Words With Friends?

Yes! While Words With Friends uses a slightly different dictionary and scoring system, our comprehensive word list covers the vast majority of valid WWF words. The letter scores shown are for standard Scrabble, but the word finds work great for WWF too.

How are the point values calculated?

Point values use standard Scrabble letter scores (e.g., Q=10, Z=10, X=8, J=8, K=5, etc.). The score shown is the base score -- without any board multipliers (double/triple letter or word scores). Blank tiles used to form a word contribute 0 points.

What's the highest-scoring Scrabble word?

The highest-scoring single word in Scrabble history is OXYPHENBUTAZONE across a triple word score, scoring 1,778 points -- though this is theoretically impossible in a real game. In practice, the highest single-turn score ever recorded is 392 points for CAZIQUES. Our finder helps you find the best word from your actual rack letters.
